At the foot of the mountain of Montjuïc, without needing to actually climb up into it, and very close to Plaza España and Sants Station, you can find both the cultural centre named Caixaforum and the pavilion of Mies Van der Rohe. These two are obligatory stops for art and architecture lovers.
The
exhibitions that are organised at
Caixaforum are always a good option for a morning in Barcelona. Located at the foot of Montjuïc, next to Sants Station, this jewel of the industrial
modernism built by the architect
Puig i Cadafalch was rehabilitated and extended by the Japanese architect Arata Isozaki.
We have seen great exhibitions in this building: Dalí, Goya, Delacroix, Barceló, Lucien Freud, Cartier-Bresson, Le Corbusier, Chaplin, Pixar… There is always a variety of exhibitions, activities and even concerts in its 12,000 m2. It is advisable to be alert for their agenda because it is a must in topics of art in the city.
Oh! And this is a secret. Don’t forget to go up to the roof to enjoy not only beautiful views, but also the great work of the architect.
As you leave, you can find one of the most emblematic buildings of
modern Barcelona just across the street.
The german architect
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) designed the
pavilion that represented Germany at the Barcelona International Exposition of 1929. It was dismantled in 1930 and later reconstructed. We are very lucky to have a building of this great architect today in the city, because is one of the most important names of the European architecture of the twentieth century. A curious fact is that Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich designed, especially for this pavilion, a chair (
the Barcelona chair) that became an undeniable icon of modern design. It is still commercialised today and it remains an emblem of that moment and this city.
