El Raval, right next to Las Ramblas, is not a neighbourhood that everyone likes. But for us it’s an area with a lot of charm. Especially for the mix of people, the mixture of cultures, the small streets, the smells, the great cultural offer you can find and the corners you can discover.
This plan is for those who love to discover different areas of the city and also love cinema. The Filmoteca de Catalunya, located in a building by the architect Josep Lluís Mateo, has a certain brutalist air and it’s located in the heart of El Raval. The wide cinematographic offer is for the most demanding fans of the seventh art. You can check the program on its website. They have very interesting film series and this can be a good option to spend a quieter time in Barcelona.
Either leaving or before entering, La Monroe restaurant, located in the same building and with a nice terrace that overlooks the square, has a very appetizing lunch menu and is a good place to have a beer and comment on the movie that you have just watched. Their tapas are more than good, exquisite grandmother croquettes, golden eggs, marinated salmon dices… Their sandwiches are also a good option, as well as their great variety of cocktails.
If you want to end the day as a true movie character, there’s a bar called Marsella right across the same square, which is one of the oldest bars in Barcelona and which stills retains its original appearance. It is like going back in time when you go in. You feel like if you were in a movie set in the 19th century, where glasses of absinthe ran through the tables.
